what is

Sports massage

For those who are unaware of what sports massage is, it’s a specialised type of massage which is designed to address specific needs for people participating in sports and exercise (not just professional athletes). Sports Massage is typically used before, during, and after physical events and as part of training maintenance, however it can also be beneficial for people with specific injuries.

Sports massage is effective for treating injuries, pain or restricted range of motion. It is excellent for helping to treat both chronic and acute issues, focusing on treating both the cause and the resulting symptoms for the most efficient recovery.

We use a variety of classic massage strokes together with specific deep tissue techniques, working on the body’s soft tissues, trigger points, muscles, tendons and fascia. It helps to free adhesions, break down scar tissue and decrease inflammation.

Other physical benefits of Massage Therapy can include:

  • Increases joint mobility and range of motion.
  • Increasing the elasticity and suppleness of scar tissue, which may be prominent after suffering soft tissue damage.
  • The application of sports massage, prior to and after exercise, may enhance performance, aid recovery and prevent injury.
  • Increases flexibility and relieves tightness and stiffness.
  • Massage can promote an increase in blood circulation, delivering the soft tissues with oxygen and nutrients, promoting the decrease in muscle fatigue and soreness.
  • Improves the removal of toxins and waste products from the blood and muscles, which build up during physical activity.
  • Reduces oedema (excess fluid in the tissues) and swelling by increasing lymphatic drainage (the system which reduces toxins in the body).
  • Supports the nervous system by stimulating and relaxing, depending on the reasons for the massage.
  • Helps to reduce pain and stress by the positive release of endorphins.
  • Can assist in the prevention of injury in the long term.
  • Encourages feeling invigorated and with more energy. This can be a major benefit before an event or competition.
